After a restless night, Mykala awoke before the sun rose as he did normally. He noted that the other Apaugallas and Merryn were stirring as well. He stretched and slowly stood, grumbling quietly as his sore muscles protested the movement.
Lukas grinned as he heard Mykalaâs muttered complaints. Sayenne had yet to complain of anything on this journey. âHow now Mykala? Tis this journey too much for you? Are you getting weak and too old for such a trip?â
Mykala growled and cursed roundly under his breath. âTis too many rocks in this hard dirt for comfort tis all. Iâm not old and anyone who says otherwise may find out first hand.â
At the sound of voices, the others awoke. Sayenne quickly understood the direction of the conversation and almost laughed. Luc was teasing his friend, but Mykala had yet to recognize it.
Lukas forced a concerned frown as he turned to face Mykala and continued, âYou whine like mi granpadret. I have found the soft grass here to be a cushion of paradise.â He waved to the others. âHow about you? Tis the ground hard enough to complain about? Or did you sleep well?â
With several grins behind Mykalaâs back, the others agreed that the grass was soft, better than at home, and that they felt no discomfort. Merryn ignored the male blustering. Sayenne busied herself with collecting her backpack, checking the straps to ensure she cinched them tightly so that she kept her head down and avoided letting Mykala see her grin.
But Lukas noted her grin. As Mykala blustered some more, Lukas grinned at him and decided to let him off the hook while driving home his point that Sayenne had not complained yet. âAh well, as the leader of this party, perhaps tonight you will find us a better place to camp, one that will suit the needs of everyone.â He rose fluidly and sauntered off.
Mykala gaped at him, then stormed away as Lukasâs point sank in when the others started snickering behind him. Only he had complained, not Sayenne.
Hours later, he caught Lukas aside during the morning rest break. âAbout earlier,â he started, then grinned. âNo hard feelings. I deserved that.â
âAiy.â
Mykala glanced to Sayenne. âYou admire her strength.â
âAiy.â
âGoesh suerte when you disagree with her. Then you get to face that strength.â
Luc grinned. âTis niet suerte. Understanding works better.â
Mykala nodded and turned to the others, calling an end to the rest break.
